Mesothelioma or malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which develops in the membrane surrounding the surface of the majority of the body’s organs. The most common type of mesothelioma affecting people who worked with asbestos affects the lining of the lungs.
Mesothelioma can affect people who have experienced relatively low levels of asbestos exposure. It is now known that secondary exposure, which occurs when coming into contact with items such as clothing covered in asbestos dust, can also cause this type of cancer.
Common symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, pleural effusion (fluid surrounding the lung), pain in the chest wall and wheezing or coughing. Sometimes blood may be present in fluid coughed up.
Mesothelioma usually develops many years after initial exposure to asbestos, with estimates varying from 20 – 60 years post exposure.
Approximately 2,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the UK; this figure is expected to increase into the near future.
